Marc Chagall: Creation, Original Lithograph Verve Bible, 1960
Marc Chagall: Creation (Garden of Eden), Original Lithograph for Verve Illustrations for The Bible, 1960

Details:

"Creation"

This lithograph eradiates effortlessness, harmony and joy. Its colouring also conveys peace of mind and a feeling of security. Everything in this work is in motion: angels, birds, terrestrial animals, fish, and Adam and Eve. It seems as if the creatures were dancing a jig around the white circular centre. Everything is illuminated and receives light from this bright area. It was a matter of course for the Jewish artist Marc Chagall to not depict God as God is and will always be unsearchable. He is the light and this is how Chagall depicted him. The iconography deems the circular and the globular shape to be the perfect surface and body. It is therefore an appropriate symbol for insinuating God.

The first human couple is still naked which implies their unsuspecting nature and innocence. Adam serves himself with fruit from the Garden of Eden, his gaze directed at the creature he deemed to be an appropriate sexual partner. This is how Chagall created a gorgeous illustration of the history of creation with his splendid art.

Remarks: Biblical reference: Gen 1

In 1956, the French art critic and publisher Tériade brought out a special issue of the legendary art magazine Verve, which was exclusively devoted to one of Marc Chagalls major themes: The Bible. For this outstanding issue, Chagall composed 18 full-page colour lithographs and 12 in black and white. For his "Bible I" Marc Chagall focused on characters from the Old Testament such as the Founding Fathers, the Kings, the Prophets and Angels. Four years later, in 1960, the follow-up issue "Illustrations for The Bible" was published, with another 24 gorgeous color lithographs. Since then, vast numbers of reproductions were put in circulation which are anything but original(!) lithographs.
