Details:

"Paradise" II, The Green Donkey

Marc Chagall began his famous series Bible II with altogether six creation themes. In order to better distinguish it from the composition of the same name "Paradise - The Tree of the Knowledge", this one is often named "Paradise - The Green Donkey".

The eye of the beholder naturally comes to rest on Chagall's bright green donkey. In those days, donkeys were considered to be peaceful and good-natured, and this is how it is depicted in this work. The donkey's head appears decorated as for a pageant. Left of the animal, a bit to the side, you can see the first human couple: Adam, an exceptionally handsome young man with curly hair. He puts his hand over Eve to protect the only being of Creation who is a potential sexual partner for him. She is depicted naked and full-bosomed - a sign for fertility and unbiasedness about all flesh. In a carefree manner, they enjoy the fruit of the Garden of Eden. The green colour of the donkey also appears in their bodies, it is the colour of hope and a fulfilled life.

In this work, Chagall depicted plants, animals and human beings in peaceful harmony with each other. The longing for these paradise-like conditions has remained a human desire to this day.

In 1956, the French art critic and publisher Tériade brought out a special issue of the legendary art magazine Verve, which was exclusively devoted to one of Marc Chagalls major themes: The Bible. For this outstanding issue, Chagall composed 18 full-page colour lithographs and 12 in black and white. For his "Bible I" Marc Chagall focused on characters from the Old Testament such as the Founding Fathers, the Kings, the Prophets and Angels. Four years later, in 1960, the follow-up issue "Illustrations for The Bible" was published, with another 24 gorgeous color lithographs. Since then, vast numbers of reproductions were put in circulation which are anything but original(!) lithographs.
