| "The Juggler" (Mourlot 290) "The Juggler" is an enchanting, particularly finely drawn colour lithograph by Marc Chagall from 1960. The protagonist of this work is the female acrobat in the centre, surrounded and decorated by flowers and a donkey’s head that enters the picture on the lower left. As in many of his lithographs, Chagall accompanies the spectacle that can be seen here with organic forms such as flowers and twigs. This is done with a lightness that closely resembles the elated play of the juggler. He repeatedly creates a harmony between animal and human being. Deep black lines are contrasted with soft colours. The genius painter provided the scene with the right degree of joy and dynamics by his use of individual, colour-rich brushstrokes in magenta, green, purple, yellow and blue. It is a visual spectacle one never grows tired of looking at. The upside-down harlequin on the right embodies the crazy world of the circus that Chagall loved during his whole lifetime. This is N O T a mass-produced reprint (offset or photo lithograph from a later "Limited edition") but the original lithograph from the a.m. volume, exactly as referenced in Mourlot's catalogue raisonné.
