Details:"Le Panthéon" (Mourlot no. 95) In the first few years after returning from exile in America to Paris in 1948, Chagall incessantly painted Paris, "his city". As the burial and memorial place for Paris celebrities, the Pantheon was one of the main attractions of the city. It also accommodates the pendulum with which Foucault proved the rotation of the earth. It is quite possible that this fact rather than its function as a mausoleum prompted Chagall to paint the building. His brushwork in this original monochromatic lithograph is unusually two-dimensional, but it does not take away any of the composition’s impressiveness.
