Details:Mother and child at the Eiffel Tower ("Mère et enfant à la Tour Eiffel") Chagall crafted his lithographs mostly with a brush and a quill, and with black and coloured chalk. Looking at this composition, which is painted in black, we are able to relate to why he used this combination of painting utensils. It originated in 1954, together with other compositions on Paris. This was several years before Chagall broke through to achieve public recognition with his Jerusalem Windows. At that time, he had only worked together with the Mourlot Studio and with Charles Sorlier, who introduced him to the complex technique of colour lithography, for a few years (since 1950). Therefore, most of Chagall’s very early lithographs were monochromatically crafted and the etching techniques, which he had been using for quite some time, were similarly implemented.
