"Im Profil mit Archaeopteryx"

In his life as a painter and sculptor, Paul Wunderlich was frequently inspired by prehistorical creatures and objects. In 1994, he experimented with a stylized depiction of a flying archaeopteryx, which he used as a signet in various portraits – sometimes on the forehead, or on the throat, or the temple. For Wunderlich, this also concluded the scientific discussion as to whether the feathered animal was a flightless dinosaur or already an urvogel. But it might also have been the mere scientific designation archaeopteryx lithographica that inspired him to use the animal as a signet on some of his lithographs.

Due to the simple, almost monochrome construction of this portrait with its Nefertiti-like traits that Wunderlich often idealized, this picture exhibits a peculiar fascination.
