Details:"Corpus Domini" (Corpus Christi) - 1974 For Catholic Christians, Corpus Christi is one of the most important holidays in the church year, marked by festive services and solemn, magnificent processions. Eduard Bargheer depicted such a procession in the print offered here, presumably in one of the rural regions of Italy where he lived for a time. Although Corpus Christi was abolished as a public holiday throughout Italy in 1977 for commercial reasons, "Corpus Domini" continues to be celebrated by the Vatican and the Pope on the second Thursday after Pentecost, that is, in May or June of each year. In keeping with the lively, joyful folk festival character of this celebration, the artist used bright, vividly colorful tones for this etching. Here is one of 90 copies, numbered and signed in pencil by Bargheer and printed on sturdy wove paper.
