| | Details:"La Tristesse du Roi" (Sorrow of the King) In 1952, Matisse created one of his legendary paper-cut works in his studio in Nice. Two years later, it was acquired by the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris, where it remains in the museum’s collection to this day: "La Tristesse du Roi". The technique of "Gouaches découpées" - paper painted with gouache from which the artist cut out his figures and shapes with scissors - enabled Matisse, who had fallen seriously ill in 1941, to continue his artistic work. The French publisher Tériade recognized the historical significance of this work, which was presented at the "Salon de Mai", and had it lithographed for his art magazine "Verve" in the very year of its creation in order to make it accessible to the public. This is that 1952 lithograph - not one of the later photomechanically reproduced art prints! This can also be recognized by the two small illustrations on the back of the print, along with the text "La Tristesse du Roi par Henri Matisse" - these are missing on the later reproductions (see Photo 3). "La Tristesse du Roi" presumably draws on the biblical motif of Salome's dance before Herod - the Centre Georges-Pompidou sees the work primarily as Matisse's reflection on aging, ultimately a self-portrait of the artist, who is aware of his own transience as well as the beauty surrounding him. Matisse himself described this painting in a letter to the Dominican friar and art critic Marie-Alain Couturier as follows: "A sad king, a seductive dancer, and a figure playing music, from whose guitar golden saucers fly, twining around the dancing woman."
