| | Details:Eiffel Tower and Donkey ("La Tour Eiffel à l'Ane") In 1953, Chagall dedicated a series of oil paintings to Paris, the city he felt he owed so much to. Inspired by it, he made eleven great lithographs on Paris for an exhibition at the 'Galerie Maeght' that was planned for the following year. Maeght issued these in their art publication called "Derriere le miroir" accompanying exceptional exhibitions. What does the lithograph "La Tour Eiffel a l'ane" tell us about the city? Of course, there is the Eiffel Tower, which symbolised freedom for Chagall, just like Chagall's famous donkey did. The fact that he depicted the Eiffel Tower upside down, demonstrates that in the city he experienced at the time his spirits were running high. The globular hen flouncing through the painting, the umbrellaed fish, and last but not least, the strong and lucid colours intensify the rollicking joie de vivre this painting radiates.
