Details:"Eve incurs God's displeasure", 1960 Chagall created a touching work with this original graphic. It depicts Eve, naked, and exposed as a consequence of her guilt. The way she holds her right arm, her eyes cast down and her face blushed in embarassment convey something of the sense of guilt she is tormented by. However, God hasn't abandoned her. In the upper left-hand corner of the work, we can see the Hebrew tetragrammaton JHWH, the letters of God's name Jahwe, "I am here for you". This is how one could translate the name, and the friendly, paternal character of God's messenger in the upper right-hand corner of the graphic conveys just that. The big tree protecting Eve with its branches reinforces this idea. Eve's body looks like a dish ready to receive Adam's love, the fertility of which is displayed in their children, Cain and Abel. This implies that Eve becomes the life-giving Mother of All. Adam and Eve will shape their future under to the changed conditions.
