Details:"Job in Despair" The tragic story of the pious and ethically very integer Job has touched Chagall so deeply that he dedicated two lithographs of his second volume on the Bible to him. The desperate Job, whom we can see in this graphic, seems to get into one catastrophe after another in spite of his belief in God. When even his friends begin to judge him, he seems to be about to give up. Darkness surrounds him, he appears deeply worried, ill, and sad, resting his head on his hand. But it wouldn’t be Chagall if he left the desperate Job without any solace - a green angel in the left-hand corner of the painting seems to be there to prevent the worst outcome. Job does not realise the meaning of these tests and asks himself at every new set of bad news how God can tolerate it that he is punished so severely. However, he remains faithful to God – and in the end is rewarded for this faithfulness.
