| "Mère et enfant devant Notre-Dame" Mourlot 82 This poetic colour lithograph by Marc Chagall from 1952 is one of the earliest works of this kind. He drew it for his first Paris cycle "Vision de Paris", an homage to the city that became his home. He managed to capture a rare, almost paradisiac atmosphere of the French metropolis. The representation of the cathedral of Notre Dame is a most delicate drawing. The protagonists of the picture can be seen on the courtyard - a "contemporary" Virgin Mary and her Child Jesus. Maria, to whom the Cathedral is dedicated, is holding Jesus in her arms. The harmonious composition is surrounded by a turquoise blue and yellow green circle that seems to surround the scene like a mild nocturnal wind. Chagall attributed an equally important role to the cock, a French national symbol. From the towers of Notre Dame, he oversees the peaceful image of a caring mother with her child. The unison of figurative and abstract elements in this picture with its tender colours creates a balanced whole, and the harmony that Chagall transports with the work also affects the viewer.
