Details:"Les Monstres de Notre-Dame" Just as the hunchback of Notre Dame was not a monster, Chagall's animals were never monsters, either. Chagall must have named this lithograph with a smile on his face. Even though his little 'monsters' appear over-sized on top of the Notre Dame cathedral, the cock in the picture looks rather longingly to the lovers floating above it, while the female donkey seems to struggle having to decide between Sacre Coeur and the pantheon. It is a peaceful scene of the Paris twilight, and a splendid graphic to the story of the hunchback of Notre Dame and Esmeralda. The composition and choice of colours are typical for Chagall's art.
