| | Details:"The tree of Jesse" (L'arbre de Jessé) It must have been autumn when Marc Chagall was thinking about a picture that he would present in the pre-Christmas period of 1960. Instead of the familiar Christmas tree, he chose the tree of Jesse that is decorated with Christian symbols in some parts of the world during advent. It is considered as a symbol for the lineage of Christ. This is also the origin of the Christmas carol "Lo, How a Rose E’er blooming […] Of Jesse’s lineage coming". As one can expect from Chagall, however, this tree of Christ is not rooted in the earth as any other tree. Here the tree grows from between the two towers of Notre Dame into the nocturnal Paris sky, glowing in all kinds of colours like a grand firework display. It is surrounded by familiar symbols of Chagall’s: the fish (this time with a donkey head), the sun and the moon, the painter with his easel, a couple with a child and the great clock that he attached to "Our Lady of Paris" (Notre Dame). Chagall had to work on one lithographic limestone per colour.
