| | Details:"Sommeil d'hiver" (Hibernation) For this winterly work, Klee chose cool, but also warming pastel shades. For him, winter is obviously more than frost, coldness and frozen nature, and also a time of hidden becoming, of inner growing-up. There is a woman who seems to be sleeping, and her belly is curved. A small heart, drawn in a strong red, explains the curved belly. She is pregnant, a new life is growing inside her that she will, like a bear, give birth to in spring. This lithograph with the subject of "winter" was Paul Klee’s contribution to the art magazine Verve from 1938, published by Tériade, in which three other famous painters artistically represented the remaining seasons.
